Key Objectives

SUEL's objectives are to:

  • Manage the creation of a portfolio of intellectual property capable of commercial exploitation
  • Provide advice to university staff during the early phases of relevant projects to ensure that their and the university’s interests are protected in the most effective manner
  • Build teams that provide, as necessary, financial, legal, sales, marketing, production, management and any other specialist skills to university staff to assist them in the commercial exploitation of the intellectual property developed in the course of their employment by the university
  • Create and manage a Seedcorn Fund to underwrite the transition of commercially relevant projects from research to development
  • Develop links to sources of funding to support the successful spin-out of companies based in intellectual property developed by university employees
  • Assist in the day-to-day management of university spin-out companies, paying due regard to the requirements of good corporate governance
  • Provide regular reports to the board of Sheffield University Enterprises Limited on the performance of the company and the activities of the spin-out companies it owns on behalf of the university
  • Play a full part in local, regional, national and international activities relevant to the mission of Sheffield University Enterprises Limited
  • Manage Sheffield University Enterprises Limited so that the company makes a profit from its activities
