Commercial Assessment System (CAS)

The Commercial Assessment System was designed by SUEL in conjunction with the University to facilitate the progression of potentially commercial university research towards licensing and spin-out opportunities.

The Commercial Opportunity Disclosure (COD) form is used to make a short initial disclosure at the CAS0 stage, and is then passed to SUEL for scoring and evaluation by the CAS group. The CAS group meets regularly and consists of representatives of the University and SUEL. Progression to CAS1 and CAS2 is dependent on the outcome of CAS0.

To disclose a commercial opportunity to the Research Office, click on the link at the left hand side to access the on-line COD form, the information provided will be kept confidential by the Research Office and SUEL. Proposers should limit disclosure of their idea outside the CAS system as much as possible as this may significantly affect the commercial viability of the idea. The questions should be self-explanatory and only require brief answers, but if you are unsure about what is required, contact your normal correspondent in either the Research office, Office of Corporate Partnerships or SUEL for advice before submitting.

It is a three phase gate process:

• The interface between SUEL and the University, administered by the Research Office

• Where the opportunity is processed and assessed for potential as either a licensing or spinout opportunity, administered by SUEL
  

• The route for processing spinout opportunities and developing an operating company, administered by SUEL
