CAS 1

The start of CAS 1 is the point of full-handover from the University to SUEL, where the COD becomes a project to which a BEM is assigned. The BEM then works together with the academic and the CAS 1 Group to progress the project. The CAS 1 Group consists of:

• IP & Licensing Manager, SUEL (Chair)
• Managing Director, SUEL
• Company Secretary, SUEL
• Director, White Rose Centre for Enterprise
• University of Sheffield, Pro Vice Chancellor for Research

All of the above have voting rights regarding project progression if general consensus is not achieved.

Also in attendance are
• Members of the IP & Licensing Team
• Office Manager, SUEL (CAS Minutes)
• Accountants from the Business Services Office
• Invited Observers e.g. Project Director, Knowledge Starts.

This group makes key decisions regarding the commercial progress of projects within SUEL.

Commercial opportunities are evaluated by iterative scoring against a set of criteria laid down in the Commercial Opportunity Appraisal Process (COAP).

The project is first presented to the CAS 1 Group as an enhanced COD with a summary provided by the BEM outlining the idea, market and feasibility. The enhanced COD describes the product, the market and costs involved. An estimate of the resource required to develop the enhanced COD into a proto-business plan is also given along with a recommendation for patent protection, licensing or spin-out.
