University spin-out company sold to US firm Plasso Technology is advanced in surface chemical modification for applications within healthcare and life sciences.
The owners East Hill Management Company, White Rose Technology Seedcorn Fund and Biofusion have sold the company for an undisclosed sum.
Plasso was spun out of Sheffield University's department of Engineering Materials and it was incorporated in February 2003.
It has recently been researching ways of immobilising biomolecules called glycosaminoglycans, or GAGS, which are found on the surface of cells, which are believed to play an important role in the progress of diseases such as cancer, deep vein thrombosis and arthritis. So this is a new beginning for Plasso, they will now be able to study with modern techniques.
The chief executive, Sameer Kothari, described the sale of Plasso as "a welcome move in bringing our company's research and development to market globally."
Plasso was aquired by BD, a leading global medical technology company, on May 4, 2007, and will be operated through its BD Biosciences - Discovery Labware business unit. Until further notice, all orders for Plasso products will continue to be placed through the Plasso offices in Sheffield, UK.
