SEAMS – Infrastructure Management ConsultantsSEAMS is an extremely ambitious and highly successful knowledge-based business, formed in February 2002 and spun-out from UK Government Research Council sponsored university research. SEAMS offers leading edge decision support; infrastructure modelling and optimisation technologies and methods. These technologies and methods come under the brand of WiLCO. WiLCO is a unique technology which can be deployed across a range of public service environments including water, police, electricity, gas and oil industries. The WiLCO technology was first deployed in the water industry across the UK with great success, and clients include United Utilities, Northumbrian Water and Scottish Water. The company is now embarked on a sophisticated technology transfer programme which will see the technology deployed into other public service sectors; police, electricity, oil, gas. Since its inception, SEAMS has doubled its turnover year on year with a projected turnover this year of £2.8m. It employs over 30 staff, most of these high-quality graduate positions. The development of the company is still being driven by the co-founders, Dr Peter Skipworth and Dr Mark Engelhardt, with significant business acumen now drawn in to complement their technical skills. Last year, the company moved to new premises in a fashionable area of Sheffield. These premises were officially opened by Lord Hattersley during 2004. SEAMS is one of the few companies to successfully exploit university research, overcoming the problems of transferring high level IP into useful services within the business environment. SEAMS will contribute greatly to the redevelopment of the local economy, focusing on new sector skills and bringing a new prosperity to the region. It is also one of the new wave of companies beginning to provide services across the web that offers real value to clients, rather than simply accessing a new retail space.
