What is a Mentor?

In the course of SUEL’s activities we seek to identify projects that may have commercial potential. To better assess that potential and understand the risks, resources, and possible returns associated with these projects, SUEL seeks the assistance of experienced individuals to act as mentors.

Mentors work with academic and SUEL staff to assess and evaluate specific opportunities and, where appropriate, to prepare strategic and business plans and to participate in taking these projects through to conclusion.

What does it take to be a Mentor?

The process of transferring knowledge from academe to the marketplace may be complex and there are many routes to completion from sale or licensing of valuable technology to formation of “spin-out” companies. The Mentor is expected to define the most suitable route and, importantly, to make a significant commitment, often including a personal financial contribution, to the achievement of the desired outcome.

Many of our projects result in the formation of new companies to act as the vehicle for the commercial exploitation of the intellectual property. For that reason, experience of “start up” and development of small businesses is considered important as is a demonstrable “hands-on” mentality. Many, but not all, opportunities are, as one would expect of output from a world-renowned research-led University, “high-tech” and current knowledge of relevant disciplines is highly desirable.

Remuneration for the Mentor is by negotiation and will reflect the skills, experience and commitment required.
